Big Day on Sunday

For those of you that know me, be prepared for some big news. On Sunday, I am participating in an event that is very new for me. I will be running in my first 5k road race. It is the O’Hartford Run in downtown Hartford.  My friend Juice inspired me a few years ago that I could actually get into running and be able to do a 5 or 10k. I have never been a runner or jogger. In fact, I didn’t try out for the high school soccer team because you had to complete a 2 or 3 mile run in a certain time to move forward in the try outs.

After thinking about it for a few years, I started running on the treadmill last fall. I did fairly well, I got up to 2 miles and I could go at close to a 10 minute clip, which is slow I know compared to runners but I was pleased. I got thrown off the track by my surgery but am back on beam now. Dawn runs and Ryan took it up last year as well, so I wanted to get back in thinking I may have some race buddies. I figured it could be a healthy new habit and works well with two of my other interests, travelling and charitable donations.  I would love to get to the Cape to do one or up to Vermont, etc.

I know outdoor running is way different than the treadmill. I tried last fall. I went running with Dawn’s dog Sammy, it did not go well. Pace was too fast, weird body parts hurt, breathing was off, etc.  My only goal for this one is to finish without walking at any points. I have been back on the treadmill about 3-4 weeks now. My pace is way off but I am going for more than 2 miles now. We shall see, I hope it goes ok and I can get some more of these in this year!

    You keep on keeping on. I was never a runner and just said I am going to try and now I have been running for about 5 years now and I have entered 5k runs and at the age of 52 I have placed in masters. I give the credit to God because he is my joy and he is my strength. I know there is a difference in running indoors and outdoors and treadmills. This winter I have had to run indoors and I can tell the difference. It might be a state of mind. You keep on keeping on!!
