Santana/Derek Trucks Band Review 4/5/08

The lady and I headed down to Mohegan Sun on a nice Saturday afternoon to check out a fantastic double bill for guitar and jam enthusiasts, Santana playing with the Derek Trucks Band opening up. I was excited for some sit in jams between the two guitar greats.

We broke up the ride down with the first stop of the year at Harry’s in Colchester for some of the best burgers and fries to be had anywhere! I reviewed this place last fall.  Its a family tradition for Dawn and now I am in love with it as well. I went for two cheeseburgers with the fries. Great start to the day. Once we got the casino, we hit the new Mexican place, Del Toro for cocktails before the show. Dawn gave a big thumbs up for the margaritas. I stuck to Negra Modelo’s but was quite pleased as well. The menu looked great and I would not be surprised if we went for a meal there sometime down the road.  The casino was packed as usual, I can’t imagine the money that gets dumped down there. You would never know the economy was struggling by taking a walk thru Mohegan Sun.

This was my second show at the Mohegan Sun Arena. I really love the venue. Its an arena, but its small enough where it feels intimate (for an arena) and there isn’t a bad seat there. Both times I have sat in the upper bowl and been pleased with the sound and sightlines.  Derek Trucks Band did their usual great set. My only issue with them is you don’t see alot of variety in their setlists.  All of the musicians are fantastic with Trucks being a virtuoso. Anyday and the sit in with Santana on My Favorite Things were the highlights for me. Dawn loved Count M’Butu on percussion! The setlist is

Volunteered Slavery
Gonna Move
Leavin’ Trunk
I Know
Get Out Of My Life
My Favorite Things1
Anyday

1w/Carlos Santana – Guitar

Onto the main event, Santana! You may think of this one as almost an oldies act by now. I went to see them two years ago with one of my nephews more or less because I had never seen him and always wanted to. It was a great show. They are still a viable and vibrant band and Carlos Santana still rips it. This show was better than that one by quite a bit. As the last time I saw them, they opened up with Jingo, my all time favorite Santana tune.  He has a nine piece band, including three percussionists, keys, two horns, rhythm guitar, bass player and of course the star, Carlos Santana.  Everyone in the band contributed and was excellent. Just about all of them got a chance to solo or at least shine in different songs. Oh, I forgot, the two vocalists as well.  So, let’s make that 11 onstage.

Not only did Carlos sit in with Derek’s band but Derek came out with Santana for at least 20 minutes on this wild medley of tunes. To see the two of them trading licks and solo was amazing. Both artists seemed excited to be sharing the stage.  Santana played I think it was about 2 hours and 15 minutes, a great high energy and exploring musical show. If you have never seen Santana and are interested, check them out!
